The grand irony - would a lack of access allow a sportswriter to better understand the actual fan experience? To complain about seating? Ticket price gauging?

Access is not an evil in and of itself, but can lead to dependence & capture. Those are the evils - when the media's reporting changes as a favor, not due to factual circumstance.

And, of course, mad respect to the sports journalists, such as Ives Galarcep, who still try to build a web of tipsters and break stories in the 21st century twitter era. Even if I find the topics mundane and prose less than pretty, I can imagine then running on a treadmill 24 hours per day, sweating out scoops and following tips down rabbit holes.
